Shivrinarayan is a small Nagar Panchayat town in Janjgir–Champa District of Chhattisgarh state. It is one of the prominent pilgrimage centers of Chhattisgarh. Its immensely sacred Nar Naryana Temple is actually symbolic of this town’s historical association with epic Ramayana. This very association with epic Ramayana makes this temple and this town an important pilgrimage center for devotees from across Chhattisgarh, Odisha and other parts of the country.

History of Shivrinarayan

Many ancient Indian scriptures unanimously point that Lord Rama during his 14 years of exile had made a very brief stay in this small town. In those ancient days Shivrinarayan town was obviously nothing but a dense forest area. In scripture this dense forest area has been mentioned as ‘Dandakaranya’ region. This sacred region was believed to have stretched till present day Bastar region. Coming back to Shivrinarayan’s association with Ramayana, then our ancient scriptures further tell us that Lord Rama had eaten abundance of Berry fruits during his brief stay here. This fruit, according to scriptures, was presented to Lord Rama by beautiful woman called Shabari, who was actually adherent devotee of Lord Rama. It goes without saying that this soulful association with Ramayana has literally shaped the identity of this town. We mean had not been this association Shivrinarayan would not have carved out a special place as scared pilgrimage center of Chhattisgarh state.

Economy of Shivrinarayan

Although a Nagar Panchayat, Shivrinarayan is still largely a small rural village. Therefore its economic characteristics are much similar to most of the small villages in rest of India. Be it overdependence on agricultural sector, or be it overwhelming absence of industries and service sectors, or be it having shortage of skilled labourers. However, Shivrinarayan is not an economically backward town either. This is because Janjgir–Champa District is one of the agricultural prosperous districts of Chhattisgarh state. And not mention that Shivrinarayan town is located in the very heart of this District. Transportation in Shivrinarayan

Shivrinarayan town does not have railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is Nalia Railway Station, which is located 32 kms away. Other nearby railway stations are Champa Railway Station and Kapan Railway Station, located 35 kms away. Owing to complete absence of city buses and private taxis , auto rickshaws here are sole caretaker of local transportation system here. Now since auto rickshaws here are present only in decent numbers, locals have to make considerable effort to get auto rickshaw, especially when they are in interiors of the town.

Tourist Attractions in Shivrinarayan

Shivrinarayan biggest tourist attraction is obviously the sacred Nar-Narayana Temple, also known as Shivrinarayan Temple. Nar Narayana Temple is believed to be 2,500 years old. Authentic historical accounts suggest that this sacred temple was constructed by a local king Raja Shabar. Architecturally speaking, the temple is pretty huge and is built in unique dome shape. There are many beautiful cravings of various gods on walls and pillars of this temple, which are worth witnessing even today. Coming to many of the adjoining temples, then there are nearly 6 to 7 small temples located near to Nar Narayana Temple. Amongst all these temples Jagnnath Temple stands out for its resemblance with famous Jagannath Temple of Puri town. If you never seen Puri’s Jagannath Temple, then this temple is absolutely must watch.
